Journal 3
Few weeks ago, I watched a Spanish movie called ‘Advantages of Travelling by Train’ in the Spanish class. That movie really impressed me a lot, so I want to introduce the characters and plots as well as share my thoughts to you guys. First of all, there are three chapters in the movie. Each chapter has different stories and focuses on different characters, but they have something in common, that is, the characters are all crazy and peculiar, and the stories are all surprising and unpredictable.
In first chapter, Ángel meets Helga in the train. He tells her he’s a psychiatrist, and then starting to tell the story of his patient, Martin. Martin imagines he’s a soldier and works in a field hospital. There, he falls in love with a nurse, who prostitutes herself to earn money for the orphans in the hospital and discloses the scandal of child trafficking. In fact, Martin is not a soldier but a binman. In his view, refuse processing plant is a place where government secretly monitors the lives of citizens and analyzes them through garbage. Martin even pretends as his sister to write a letter to Ángel, attract him to come to his home, and tell him the secret of refuse processing plant. In the end, Martin jumps into the garbage truck.
In second chapter, Helga cohabits with her boyfriend, Emilio, who extremely loves dog. Emilio is so obsessed with dog that he asks Helga to act as a female dog. He not only feeds dog food to her but also builds a doghouse for her. What’s more, Emilio wants to have a puppy; therefore, he forces Helga to mate with his real pet dog. After that, she puts drugs in his drink, causes him to become insane, and finally sends him to a mental hospital.
In third chapter, two disabled people fall in love with each other, and they even want to have sex. However, while the man imitates the rude action of sex videos, the woman feels disrespectful and just leaves away. Afterwards, Helga, as an editor, wants to publish the story that Ángel says, so she tries to find him. When she finds his home, she doesn’t find Ángel, instead, she finds another Ángel, who is the real psychiatrist, and she is told that Ángel is actually Martin. Then Helga goes on to find Martin’s home, and there she dies of the explosion with Martin.
After watching this movie, I could not understand what the movie is talking about, but I think it is quite special because I have never seen this kind of movie. It took a long time for me to digest the whole content of the movie. Although the stories of the three chapters seem to have no relations, they actually imply similar themes - love. Also, this movie mentioned some social issues like human trafficking. It is worthwhile to watch this movie, and I think everyone won’t forget it after watching this masterpiece.
