The Impact of Coronavirus Disease
When it comes to the major event that happened recently, coronavirus disease is definitely an answer that most people will bring to mind. To begin with, coronavirus is a type of virus that is common in wild animals; sometimes, it can transmit from animals to humans. The transmission was done through the fluids in the respiratory system based on researchers. As COVID-19 is getting more serious, more than 11,000 people around the world have died. According to Johns Hopkins University, over 275,000 people have positive test results for COVID-19 (Al Jazeera, 2020). While coronavirus disease spreads rapidly and widely all over the world, it has great impacts on people’s lives.
First, while the cases of confirmed patients arise in over 100 countries, a large number of industries has been influenced, including manufacturing and tourism. Take China for instance. It is not only the world’s factory but also the second-largest economy in the world; however, it is currently under the most serious epidemic situation. To prevent the epidemic from expanding further, all factories in China need to shut down for a period, and this indeed gives manufacturing industry a shock because China accounts for one third of world manufacturing, and it is also the largest exporting country in the world. As for tourism industry, it faces a big challenge, too. As a result of coronavirus disease, many countries have imposed entry bans for citizens or residents coming from China. Although those travel restrictions are necessarily required, they cause enormous losses to tourism industry because China has hundreds of millions of consumers who spend a lot on tourism. According to United Nations World Tourism Organization, tourists from China consume over 270 billion abroad (Fernando Duarte, 2020), which is really a high number. In terms of economy, the outbreak of coronavirus disease has certainly posed a grave threat to the globe.
Next, for the sake of public safety, entertaining events and sports activities are either cancelled or postponed, which deprive of people’s freedom and pleasure. For example, Olympics, the leading international sports event, is going to be held in Japan this year. However, owing to coronavirus disease, a lot of people are arguing about the security of holding this event. Even though Japanese government intended to carry on, public opinions forced them to defer this grand sports event. Other large-scale activities like music festivals and concerts are also asked to be suspended. Several large theaters also put off their performances. In addition, the cinemas and movie theaters across the world have been closed, which have significant impact on the film industry as well as those moviegoers. Despite the fact that these decisions are unavoidable for conducting precautionary measures, many people still feel disappointed and frustrated. Coronavirus disease causes people to lose their freedom and stay away from these leisure activities.
Last, as the number of confirmed patients keeps increasing, more and more people start to feel frightened, which give rise to public anxiety. Since people in the society have a huge fear of being infected, many governments call for citizens to perform social distancing measures, which contain the suggestion of staying at home, avoiding crowded places, and wearing masks in public areas. These measures arouse panic buying in supermarkets and pharmacies because countless consumers need to stockpile things like masks, food, toilet paper, hand sanitizer and rubbing alcohol at home. While all these things are snapped up, people become extremely anxious and worried. They thus feel strongly uncomfortable and psychologically unbalanced. As numerous people cannot successfully buy the things they need, public anxiety appeared and thus affected people mentally.
To conclude, there are several problems caused by coronavirus disease. First, because of the epidemic situation in China, manufacturing and tourism industry have severe damage, which affects the world’s economy. Second, in order to prevent the coronavirus disease from spreading, it is important to maintain public safety and at the same time limit people’s freedom. Third, as people become afraid of this disease, social events like panic buying come out, and mental health of individuals is harmed. Although the consequences of coronavirus disease seem to be incalculable, they can be perceived and experienced by most of us. While this disease is still going on, people should try their best to get over it; otherwise, there must be more serious problems emerging further.
